By using a novel optogenetic tool which allows selective erasure of long-term potentiation, we provide evidence that multiple stages of synaptic plasticity occur in sequence for the establishment of memory, each with distinct functions. Further application of this new optogenetic tool will allow for a more comprehensive temporal elucidation of synaptic plasticity events across multiple neuronal structures and populations, providing a clearer picture of memory consolidation.
