Aphasic symptomatology in neurodegenerative dementia based on the functional anatomy of language
Minoru Matsuda
Seizankai Group Izuminomori Clinic
Classical aphasic symptomatology has depended mainly on evaluation of language symptoms observed in patients with stroke, especially ischemic one. Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a neurodegenerative syndrome of progressive and initially isolated language impairment. Stroke aphasia classification schema is not applicable to PPA mainly because the susceptibility to neurodegeneration is different from vascular anatomy. Major symptoms in three variants of PPA are discussed based on the functional neuroanatomy of language, with a special reference to the differences between neurodegenerative aphasia and stroke aphasia.
