Japan is experiencing an increase in the number of patients with dementia.  The incidence of epilepsy is also increased among the elderly.  However, the prevalence of epilepsy in dementia varies.  The prolonged higher brain dysfunctions are known to be one of the symptoms related to epilepsy.  It is important to understand the association between epilepsy, dementia, and higher brain dysfunctions because epilepsy may be mistaken for dementia.
