Neuropathological basis of BPSD
Kenji Ikeda
Inflammation Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, Kagawa University
Based on highly differenciated brain function, some BPSDs are raised from localized pathological brain lesion and also from ‘core symptom’ of dementia, which is the manifestation of generalized deterioration of the brain. Clinico-pathologically, some specific BPSD symptoms often intimately appear to certain dementing disorder, which involves paticular brain regions. From such viewpoint, pathological basis of organic hallucination, some type of delusions, depressive state, anxiety, irritability, disinhibition and others are discussed. Relations between each items of BPSD, affection/emotion as their background and underlying basis of neuropathological and related disorder of neurotransmitters are also presented.
