A Case Study of the Use of the CALL System at Shohoku College

Toshiyuki YAMAGATA

This paper is intended as an introduction of the use of the CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) system in English classes at Shohoku College.
First we will survey the brief history of the development of the CALL system and its diffusion in the educational field. Then we will introduce the detailed system for our new CALL room and software.
In the main chapters, chapter 4 and 5, we are going to show the ways of teaching with the system, especially in the English conversation class, the class based on text format, the English grammar class, and the class for the TOEIC® Test. Here we will focus on two points :
  (i) what kind of equipment we should use in each class,
(ii) how we use them for effective teaching and learning.
Also we will indicate two issues related with these classes:
  (i) the correspondence to individual learning,
(ii) students' concentration and effective teaching plan.
In the last chapter, we will show the possibility of the further development of our CALL system. We will introduce the video conference system which is mainly used in the exchange activities with our sister institution, the University of Newcastle. We will also consider inevitable problems such as the change of teachers' role in the class using computers. Through this chapter we would like to search for the best way to promote computer assisted language learning and teaching.
