It is well known that sleep disturbances were identified as risk factors for developing dementia.
Although the mechanism underlying the relationships between sleep disturbance and dementia is unclear, it could be important to treat sleep disturbances appropriately for prevention of dementia. Because some hypnotics, especially benzodiazepines, are recognized as risk factor for developing dementia, non-pharmacological interventions might be beneficial for the prevention of dementia. It will be needed to develop treatment strategy for insomnia focusing on the prevention of dementia.
