After publish of the Japan guidelines for dementia treatment in 2010, new medications for Alzheimer's disease (AD) were able to use in daily clinical practice in Japan in 2011. The National Institute on Aging-Alzheimer's Association (NIA-AA) established three work groups to develop definitions and criteria for three phases of AD in 2011. The concept of AD is now widening from dementia to preclinical stage. In order to spread of the medical knowledge, these new criteria were described in compact version of the Japan guidelines for dementia treatment which were published in 2012. On the other hand, several problems remain unsolved on use of these new criteria in clinical practice as well as in community based study.
