For revision of ICD-10 (ICD-11) concerning dementia

Kenji Kosaka

Yokohama Houyuu Hospital

The classification of dementia in ICD-10 is quite unsatisfactory. The International Symposium for Diagnosis and Classification of Mental Disorders for ICD-11 was held in Tokyo in February 2008. The author reported my opinion on classification of dementia as one of the symposists.
My classification of dementia is as follows: 1) Alzheimer type dementia (ATD), 2) non-Alzheimer type degenerative dementia including dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD), 3) vascular dementia (VD), 4) mixed-type dementia, and 5) other dementia. Now it is in general believed that ATD, DLB and VD are the three major dementias, the frequency of which is reported to be about 50%, 20% and 20% of all elderly demented patients, respectively.
