Several lines of evidence indicate that amyloid β (Aβ), particularly Aβ oligomers, play a causative role in Alzheimer's disease. The precise understanding of Aβ oligomers is prerequisite for therapeutic intervention for Alzheimer's disease. From this point of view, I review the recent finding on Aβ oligomers, with special emphasis on neurotoxic molecules which could trigger a complex downstream cascade leading to the symptom of Alzheimer's disease.
