Hyperlipidemia, statin and Alzheimer disease

In recent years, a great deal of attention has been paid for the relationship between Alzheimer disease and hyperlipidemia, especially hypercholestereolmia. Results from both in vitro and in vivo basic researches suggest that the cellular cholesterol contents might affect amyloid β production, and lowering cellular cholesterol might reduce the risk of the disease. However, epidemiological studies raise a controversy whether the statin use prevents the disease progression. Apparently, more clinical studies are needed for elucidating the statin use for preventing Alzheimer disease.
